If the purpose of Namibia’s mindless and cruel seal slaughter is to generate employment, why has the number of workers decreased from 160 to 81 when the quota has been increased from 30 000 seals to 86 000 seals? Why are these seasonal workers living in tin and cardboard shacks? It has been scientifically proven seals are not responsible for a drop in fish stocks. Repeated calls from multiple organizations and individuals to the government of Namibia to change their policy on seal culling have fallen on deaf ears. Namibia Breweries Limited

For the period June 2009 to June 2010, Namibia Breweries paid around N$71 million in taxes and a further N$1.5 billion to employees, suppliers etc. As you can see from the image below, they also brew several international brands under licence. This makes it easy for our international audience to get involved in supporting the seals.

NamDeb Diamond Corporation (PTY) LTD.

2 of the 3 slaughter locations (namely Wolf and Atlas Bay) are on property controlled by NamDeb, a diamond partnership between de Beers and the government of Namibia. While de Beers have in the past been sympathetic to the plight of the Cape Fur seals and have helped facilitate meetings with the government, they have done precious little to oppose the slaughter.

Diamonds dominate Namibia’s economy. They account for more than 40 percent of export revenue and more than five percent of GDP. For the financial year ending 2010, NAMDEB posted profits of N$259 million after tax. The company is responsible for supplying more than 80 percent of the nation’s diamond production.

We feel that the company is acting without any remorse or ethics. Showing no compassion and a lack of corporate social responsibility, they continue with “business as usual” while the blood of a million seals stains the sands in which these diamonds are mined. Air Namibia

Contribution to GDP comes in the form of visitor expenditure and the airline’s own expenditure in the Namibian economy through procurement of goods and services, as well as related jobs created in resorts and general supporting industries. The Namibian Tourism sector, in which Air Namibia is a key and major player, is the country’s third largest contributor to the GDP. Air Namibia is incorporated in terms of the Company’s Act of Namibia as a Proprietary (Pty) Limited Company with Government of the Republic of Namibia as sole shareholder. The shareholding Ministry is the Minister of Finance.

The airline is positioned as a niche carrier serving domestic points within Namibia, the immediate regional markets of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, Ghana and Botswana. The airline also serves the entire Europe through Frankfurt.

Namibian Tourism

For the financial year ending 2010, tourism generated an estimated N$9 billion in revenue. The Namibian Tourism Board have 5 offices which are located in Frankfurt, London, Windhoek, Johannesburg and Cape Town. While Namibia certainly is one of Africa’s top destinations they are creating an extremely distasteful international reputation on the basis of the annual seal cull. Several successful models from other African countries have clearly shown that sustainable and viable forms of eco-tourism can employ more people and will generate around THREE HUNDRED  times more revenue than killing seals.

Hangana Seafood (PTY) LTD is a fishery company that is a subsidiary of Olthaver and List. They provide for both the local and international markets. The main catch is hake, while some other deep-water species are caught as well, i.e. kingklip, monkfish, sole and squid. The complete hake catch is processed into a final product. Bones and offcuts are used to produce fishmeal and mince. Some of the higher-value by-catch (monkfish, kingklip) are prepared as final frozen products for export and local markets.

The Namibian Government are blaming the seals for the decline in Hake stocks. They have produced no peer reviewed scientific evidence to prove that the seals are responsible for a decline in Hake stocks. On the contrary, since independence, Namibia increased its annual harvest from 300 thousand tons to 600 thousand tons. This resulted in several mass die offs of the seals due to starvation, the latest being in 2006 where up to half the seal colony starved to death. This is the largest die off of any marine mammal in recorded history. Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernard Esau regularly ignores warnings from his own scientists when allocating fishing quotas.
