Sea lion abduction – reward offered!

A group of 4 young individuals abducted a sea lion pup from a Los Angeles beach.

A group of 4 young individuals abducted a sea lion pup from a Los Angeles beach.

The Seals of Nam is offering a US$1000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people allegedly involved in a sea lion abduction. The incident took place at around 3:20 am on Sunday, April 19th at Dockweiler State Beach, Los Angeles .

A witness says 2 men and 2 women, all in their early 20’s, were harassing and taunting the animal. They wrapped it in a blanket and left in a car. They were last seen heading in the direction of the city’s international airport.

The initial police report states that the animal was a young seal pup. Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue has confirmed that a companion pup managed to escape. It was rescued and is in fact a young sea lion.

The rescued pup weighs about 25 pounds and is probably 10 months old, said Wallerstein, who stays in a trailer at the beach and was woken by security guards seeking his help. Sea lions of this size are “really small, really look cute, but they’re dangerous,” he said. “These are wild animals.”

They’re also not fit to be kept as pets.

“The animal needs fluids, it needs special treatments,” he said. “You can’t just feed it dog food. It’s not going to work.”

The federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is investigating the abduction because sea lions are a protected species. Police began a cruelty to animal investigation.
